Fixing Tellico in Ubuntu 9.10

This is Q&D [Quick and Dirty]. I hope that it makes sense.

OK campers, I broke my Tellico while trying to upgrade to the newest “tellico data” file in Ubuntu 9.10. It seems that the newest Tellico requires KDE 4.4 to work. The problem is that the Ubuntu repositories are at 4.3.x. The “Ubuntu as Windoz” upgrade strikes again

So what to do???!!!! Well here is answer from To update, use the Software Repository Guide [ https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Kubuntu] to add the following repository to your software sources list:
ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports

OR Add the line: ” http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu” [without the quotes] to /etc/apt/sources.list) to get the latest release of the KDE.

Then select “kdebase-apps” in Synaptic (or whatever package manager you use) and upgrade the kdebase-apps package. Accept the upgrades for the libs, and the other packages. This will upgrade your KDE to 4.4.0.

Now add the lines: “http://ppa.launchpad.net/dominik-stadler/ppa/ubuntu” [without the quotes] to your Software sources or to /etc/apt/sources.list

This is where the latest version of the .deb files for Tellico reside.

Now upgrade tellico (including tellico-data and tellico-scripts)… voila. Tellico now works again.

I have a ‘new’ (well, 3 months old) Acer computer. It had Windows 7 on it.

I purchased the ‘restore’ disks from Acer for $20 USD. I waited 6 weeks. Seems that the shipping company lost the shipment. I called Acer and magically the disks showed up that day. I loaded the restore disks and promptly wiped out the Windows 7. There are major bugs in the restore disks that I was sent.

I called weekly for at least another month asking where and when the disks will be sent. Finally I was told over 3 weeks ago that new masters have been made and that, “the company will ship the disks right out” to me!

No disks yet….

The machine is an Acer 5517 laptop. I have had it up and running with Ubuntu Linux 9.10 since I wiped the Windows 7 off. Acer support sucks!!! The laptop works well as a hardware platform. Just don’t buy an Acer unless you want to run Linux LOLOL.

BTW – the previous version of Ubuntu (9.04) had major issues with certain drivers, including not running either the built-in wired OR wireless ethernet cards without major code changes to the kernel. The 9.10 version runs both cards “out of the box!”

I just ran a Google search for “Beaugeek.” Truthfully I guess I should have done so before using the name for this blog. It seems that I am not the only one out there using the name “beaugeek” as a name/login/avatar. Oh well, can’t be helped now. Actually my nickname is “Bo” and comes from a time before Bo Derrick brought the name to the fore. So if you are looking here for someone that you ‘know’ from another online forum, well it probably isn’t me!

You gotta love any site that starts out with “Hello World!” Heck, I was going to put “Hello World” : ) †

OK… let’s start this with a quickie. I have been trying for I don’t know how long to get my LG 8350 phone to work with BitPIM and Ubuntu Linux. So, after hours of looking through posts, trying stuff, reading DMESG,and lsusb outputs, log files, you name it I found a post suggesting that I try running bitpim as root. Ok, not the best idea but I run a single-user install and I just want it to work! Guess what… it does! If I run bitpim as root from a console prompt it works like a charm. Obviously it’s a permissions issue. I’ll work on it and get back to ya later. Right now I’m just glad to have it working!
